I always thought of Adobe's DNG converter as a way to make a proprietary raw file more universally compatible. This matters since what I'm reading says that Adobe is not the best choice when it comes to demosaicing X-Trans raw files and it would seem that the DNG converter does not provide a work around to avoid Adobe's X-Trans processing.

at least nothing that I've been able to try. PhotoNinja won't, Capture One won't, LightZone won't, RawTherapee won't, etc. All programs that do open RAF files, Adobe excepted, won't open the DNG that Adobe creates from an RAF file. Seems the opposite is the case with RAF files. PhotoNinja opens it, Capture One opens it, LightZone opens it, RawTherapee opens it, DXO opens it, etc. Convert a less common raw file like a Samsung SRW to DNG and that DNG file opens in just about everything. Up until my experience with RAF files I always thought of Adobe's DNG converter as a way to make a proprietary raw file more universally compatible.

I downloaded the most recent update and it is the only program other than Adobe software that I can find that will open a DNG created from an RAF using the latest version of Adobe DNG converter. That is interesting, can you please upload an original RAF file and the DNG?Ĭorrection: My version of RawDigger was two versions old. RawDigger can't open a DNG from an RAF unless you set the DNG converter's compatibility back a version or two. All you will have is the RAFs that can be moved, or you will have to convert the DNG to TIFF/JPEGs to transfer them over. If you decide to swap cataloging programs such as LR to Aperture or another program you may have issues with DNG support between programs. Make absolutely sure you embed the original RAFs into the DNG if you are converting them. So does that mean DNG converter demosaics the Fuji array and then rewrites it back into the DNG as a standard Bayer array? Otherwise how is software that can't demosiac the Fuji array all of a sudden become able to process the DNG?ĪCR reads RAF files without issue and LR can store them no problem, so I am not sure I understand your post. What's going on here? I assume older CS4 can't handle RAF files because ACR 5.7 can't demosaic the Fuji non standard filter array. It might be the answer to those having trouble processing their RAF files. And you can do all sorts of saved presets in Adobe Camera Raw as well, such as ColorChecker, save your own, etc.

I'd thought I could not process my RAF files in PS, unless I went to the latest Photoshop CC.but I can! I do prefer working in DNG as it will go straight to CS4 when I've finished the main editing in Camera Raw. I don't find included Silkypix too good, and PhotoNinja has it's quirks but it is quite good. The program has great sliders and is an excellent editor for colour or B&W.Īll the time I've been trying to use other programs. This comes with my older Photoshop program CS4. The DNG files can then be worked in many programs, one of the best is Adobe Camera Raw. The program converts the RAF files and leaves them in the same folder, for example, also keeps the original RAF files of course. RAF files can be easily converted to Adobe RAW or DNG files using Adobe DNG Converter 8.4.
